Land Rescue - August 8

On August 8 at approximately 2300 STAR Flight 1 was requested by North Hays County Fire & Rescue and San Marcos EMS to assist with the rescue of a 30 y/o Male patient who had fallen approximately 30 feet down a cliff. The victim was unconscious and in critical condition. North Hays County Fire & Rescue personnel had rappelled to the victim and begun treatment and packaging the patient for extrication. On scene command elected to have STAR Flight hoist the victim out because of patient condition and difficult terrain. STAR Flight inserted a rescuer and extricated the patient via the hoist aided by night vision goggles. The rescue effort was complicated by steep terrain, overhanging canopy and darkness. The patient was transported to University Medical Center Brackenridge in Austin with potential life threatening injuries.

Flood Rescue - June 9

STAR Flight was requested to assist with flood rescue operations in New Braunfels, TX along the Comal and Guadalupe Rivers. STAR Flight was tasked with the search and rescue of 2 victims heard screaming in the trees. Once over scene a male survivor was located in a cypress tree approx 10' above the water line and 10' below the tree canopy. The rescuer was lowered to the victim using the STROP the survivor was secured the extracted and recovered into the a/c. The victim was secured with restraint. The search for a remaining survivor in the area was begun.

Land Rescue - June 5

STAR Flight 1 assisting ground units with adult male that fell 50-60 feet down steep embankment and became trapped between tractor and the ground. Units on the ground advise that due to steep terrain in the area that insertion of ALS rescue persons and extrication of patient will be safest and easiest by hoist. STAR Flight 1 conducted brief and inserted rescuer to begin patient care. IC indictaes that theycan get the extrication litter to the patients side easier by walking it than by having us lower the device. STARFlight 1 landed and passed the litter to ground units who carried it to patients side. STAR Flight 1 delivered empty hook to rescuer and patient and hoisted them out of ravine. Crew Chief elected to leave them 7m below aircraft due to short flight to LZ. Patient set on the ground without incident and loaded in aircraft for transport.

Land Rescue - May 25

STAR Flight was called in Austin to the scene of a 19 year old male who had jumped from a cliff into what turned out to be shallow water. A STAR Flight rescuer was inserted on the river bed alongside the cliff using the cable hoist. Ground EMS on scene had assessed the young man and found him to have back pain, and had immobilized him on a long spine board. The victim was secured into a Baughman bag and both victim and rescuer were then extracted from the river bed again using the hoist. The STAR Flighthelicopter flew the victim over the cliffs to a field nearby and landed. The victim was then loaded into the helicopter and transported to Brackenridge hospital.

Land Rescue - May 3

STAR Flight 1 responded to Enchanted Rock for a 50 yr old male that had fallen (height of 25' onto back) while rock climbing. Upon arrival on-scene, STAR Flight crew were informed that ground EMS along with Park Rangers had stabilized and immobilized the patient on a backboard, but the victim remained in an area that had restricted access/egress. Decision was made to hoist out the patient. A STAR Flight rescuer was inserted and the victim packaged and hoisted to an area where he could be put in the helicopter for transport. Patient was transported to University Medical Center - Brackenridge where he was treated for his injuries.

STAR Flight Assists with Greenbelt Fire

AUSTIN (KXAN) - Firefighters used a combined air and ground attack to control a fire in the Barton Creek Greenbelt

Fire crews set up in the Westlake Heights subdivision off Highway 360. While ground teams worked in the sometimes dense brush of the greenbelt, a STAR Flight helicopter dumped buckets of water in support.

Some neighbors said it was the worst fire they've seen in decades.

Crews managed to contain the fire to a half acre in a little more than an hour. Crews remained in place putting down hot spots until a little after 4 p.m.

No word yet on what sparked the fire.
