Our Goal

Young people from all backgrounds become professionals who live a self-sufficient, healthy life contributing to their community’s development and sustainability.

What We Do

Prepare and empower Travis County’s young people with the foundation of career awareness, readiness, and access through training opportunities and paid internships.

Who We Serve

Seven hundred fifty young people each program year between the ages of 14-17 who reside in the City of Austin and Travis County that are enrolled and attending school, youth with disabilities are eligible to participate up to the age of 22.

Program Requirements

  • Must reside in Travis County
  • Must be currently enrolled and attending school
  • Must have a valid current school year Student ID or Report Card
  • Must have a Social Security Card
  • Must be 14 years of age by April 1 of the current year
  • Must complete Job Readiness Training

How to Participate

The deadline has passed to attend job readiness training and submit an application to participate in the 2022 Summer Youth Employment Program. If you were unable to complete the required steps we hope that you will apply to participate in 2023.

Job Offer Emails

All job offer emails will be sent out during the week of May 16th for participation in:

  • Summer Session I: June 6, 2022 - July 8, 2022, 20 hours of work for 5 weeks

All job offer emails will be sent out by June 13th for participation in:

  • Summer Session II: July 11, 2022 - August 12, 2022, 20 hours of work for 5 weeks

Young professionals must respond to the email stating that they will either accept/decline the job offer. 

*Please note that the SYEP has a limited number of jobs and completion of the application process does not guarantee job placement. SYEP strongly recommends completing the full application process as early as possible before the deadlines in order to increase youths’ opportunities for employment.*

Program Highlights

During the Summer of 2021, SYEP employed 709 interns virtually. For the 2022 program year, SYEP is preparing to offer in-person, hybrid, and virtual employment opportunities. We will continue to prioritize the health and safety of all stakeholders and are prepared to modify summer employment plans based on the status of the COVID-19 pandemic.

TAX RATE: TRAVIS COUNTY ADOPTED A TAX RATE THAT WILL RAISE MORE TAXES FOR MAINTENANCE AND OPERATIONS THAN LAST YEAR’S TAX RATE. THE TAX RATE WILL EFFECTIVELY BE RAISED BY 3.5 PERCENT AND WILL RAISE TAXES FOR MAINTENANCE AND OPERATIONS ON A $100,000 HOME BY APPROXIMATELY $10.39.
