We provide financial assistance to qualified Travis County Residents for the following utilities:

  • Electricity
  • Natural gas and propane
  • Firewood (when it’s the primary source of heating)
  • Water
  • Trash

Eligibility

We can only assist Travis County residents who meet our income eligibility requirements.

Timeline

We assist people in the order in which they apply. We will reach out to you as soon as your application comes up on the waitlist.

Cost

It is free to receive Utility Assistance from Travis County.

How to Apply

Gather required documents

You’re going to need the following documents:

  • Valid government issued photo ID (for example, driver’s license, State ID, military ID)
  • Proof of residence in Travis County
  • Current utility bill(s)
  • Proof of all income for the 30 days prior to applying for assistance for everyone 18 and older in the household (for example, pay checks, check stubs, Social Security award letter for the current year, unemployment, child support, worker’s compensation, etc.)

For federally funded programs (Comprehensive Energy Assistance Program CEAP), you’ll need additional documents:

  • Proof of US Citizenship (for example, a US Birth Certificate or Passport)
  • Proof of Immigration Status (for example, Form I-551, Permanent Resident Card)

Submit an application

We do not accept applications sent through e-mail due to privacy issues.

There are several ways to apply for utility assistance:

Online

Go to our Application Portal to start your pre-screening.

Once the pre-screening tool confirms your eligibility, you will be directed to complete the application.

Follow the instructions and fill out the application completely. Make sure you submit the application when you’re done.

Wait to hear back from us

Once we receive your application, you’ll be added to our waitlist.

We assist people in the order in which they apply beginning January 1st of each year.

Look out for communication from our staff via phone and email so that we can best assist you.

Work with a case worker

As soon as your application comes up on the waitlist, you’ll be assigned to a caseworker. They will determine if you are eligible to receive assistance.

Please note: Additional documents may be needed to determine your eligibility for financial assistance.

Get utility assistance

Once your application is approved, payment will be sent to your utility vendor(s) for eligible services, depending on availability of funds.

Received a disconnect notice?

If you receive a disconnect notice while you are waiting, please let us know immediately by calling one of our Community Centers.

TAX RATE: TRAVIS COUNTY ADOPTED A TAX RATE THAT WILL RAISE MORE TAXES FOR MAINTENANCE AND OPERATIONS THAN LAST YEAR’S TAX RATE. THE TAX RATE WILL EFFECTIVELY BE RAISED BY 3.5 PERCENT AND WILL RAISE TAXES FOR MAINTENANCE AND OPERATIONS ON A $100,000 HOME BY APPROXIMATELY $9.12.
