If you meet the Income Eligibility and Vehicle Requirements, proceed to the next steps:

  1. Prepare the Following Required Documentation for the Vehicle Repair Program
    • A copy of your proof of insurance on the vehicle (Note: the name on the insurance documentation must match (spelled exactly the same) the name of the applicant since we are trying to verify that the applicant is the primary driver of the vehicle);
    • A copy of your driver's license; and
    • A copy of proof of income for your household (Note: a copy of the first two pages of your most recent US Income Tax Return will suffice; otherwise, you may also send us copies of your paycheck stubs from all members of your family who have worked during the previous 30 days; if you receive Social Security Disability, Social Security, SSI, Unemployment Insurance Payments, and other types of assistance, an award letter which documents that you are CURRENTLY receiving those payments will also be needed).

      or

    • A card or letter verifying eligibility for the federal or state programs listed on the eligibility page.
    NOTE: You must apply for the program, no later than 30 days from the date your vehicle fails the emissions test. An application received 30 days after your vehicle fails the test will automatically be rejected. You must apply for the program and receive a voucher BEFORE any repairs are made to your vehicle and BEFORE you purchase a replacement vehicle.
  2. Prepare the Following Required Documentation for Vehicle Replacement Program
    • A copy of your driver's license;
    • A copy of the official title to your vehicle (Note: The title must be free of liens and the name on the title must match exactly the name on the driver’s license and application form); and
    • A copy of proof of income for your household (Note: a copy of the first two pages of your 2012 US Income Tax Return-Form1040 will suffice or the W-2 Form(s), otherwise, you may also send us copies your paycheck stubs for at least the last 30 days; if you receive Social Security Disability, Social Security, SSI, Unemployment Insurance Payments, and other types of assistance, an award letter which documents that you are CURRENTLY receiving those payments will also be needed). If you have had no income for the last 30 days, we will accept a letter stating that is the case, which must also be signed and dated by you.

When will I find out if I am eligible for assistance?

It could take up to two weeks for Travis County to verify that your family income meets the guidelines and your vehicle is eligible (see new requirements information), we will issue a voucher by mail along with a list of DPS Recognized Emissions Repair Facilities that perform emissions-related repairs. In the event that you do not meet the requirements to qualify for the program you will be mailed a letter of notification.
