Appointment as Visiting Justice of the Peace Travis County, Texas

Travis County Judge Sarah Eckhardt is seeking applications from qualified individuals to serve as a visiting Justice of the Peace.

Justice of the Peace Courts provide the following services:

  • Hear traffic and other Class C Misdemeanor cases punishable by fine only.
  • Hear applications for Occupational Driver’s licenses.
  • Conduct DPS license suspension hearings.
  • Conduct peace bond hearings.
  • Hear civil cases with up to $10,000 in controversy.
  • Hear landlord and tenant disputes.
  • Hear truancy cases.
  • Perform magistrate duties.
  • Review and sign documents such as warrants, motions for continuances, civil writs, etc.

Selected candidates will be added to a roster of individuals available to serve as a visiting justice when a judge is temporarily away from the bench. A temporary justice may also be asked to serve to help dispose of accumulated business in the precinct. All attempts will be made to provide as much notice as possible regarding the time a temporary justice will be needed.

Only candidates with a legal background will be considered. Experience as a judge is preferred but not necessary. More information about required qualifications can be found in the application packet.

Visiting justices receive compensation equal to the compensation of a regular justice.
