Travis County Climate Action Plan

On June 2, 2020 the Travis County Commissioners Court unanimously approved the County’s first-ever Climate Action Plan. The Plan is intended to be a roadmap for lessening the environmental impacts of County operations. Progress will be measured and reported in the Annual Sustainability Report.

Note: The scope of the Climate Action Plan is Travis County as an organization, and not the larger Travis County Community.

Below is the Climate Action Plan as well as Travis County’s Greenhouse Gas inventory which quantifies the emissions produced by County operations.

Sustainability Reports

How are we doing?

The purpose of the Travis County Sustainability program is to instill accountability within the culture of Travis County to reduce our impact on the environment. Our team helps promote reducing energy use, conserving resources, and engaging employees and residents alike to take part in County conservation efforts. Each year, the Sustainability Program presents a report to share Travis County’s organizational performance in areas such as energy and water consumption, recycling and waste diversion, transportation, and community engagement. The report summarizes major environmental projects, programs, or success stories that occurred throughout the fiscal year (Oct 1 – Sept 30).

Policy

Texas Health and Safety Code (Section 361.425) establishes county requirements for recycling. Under this law, counties must establish and operate programs to separate and collect recyclable materials after they are used, and (Section 361.426) purchase products made of recycled material. The Travis County Commissioners’ Court adopted the Travis County Waste Management Policy on December 17, 1996, to: reduce material and waste disposal costs, reduce the volume of material sent to landfills, reduce the use of limited natural resources, prevent environmental pollution associated with waste disposal and promote the purchase and use of recycled materials.

Since 1996 the program has evolved and expanded and now includes the recycling or reuse of: paper and corrugated cardboard; scrap metal, aluminum cans, brass, steel, batteries and copper; automotive oil, used oil filters, antifreeze and tires; computers, monitors and small electronics; composting: dead animals and pre-consumer food scraps; wood material including pallets, mulch, brush and limbs; textiles, like sheets and uniforms; plastic and glass; and household hazardous waste.

TAX RATE: TRAVIS COUNTY ADOPTED A TAX RATE THAT WILL RAISE MORE TAXES FOR MAINTENANCE AND OPERATIONS THAN LAST YEAR’S TAX RATE. THE TAX RATE WILL EFFECTIVELY BE RAISED BY 3.5 PERCENT AND WILL RAISE TAXES FOR MAINTENANCE AND OPERATIONS ON A $100,000 HOME BY APPROXIMATELY $9.12.
