The Economic & Strategic Planning Division maintains a list of underutilized County-owned properties available for different types of redevelopment. As those properties become ready, we move through a redevelopment process, often involving a public-private partnership to maximize the value and return to the County and to have the highest and best use for the parcel.

Palm School Project

In April 2018, consultants completed the Palm School Historic Structure Report to assist the County in understanding the building and site’s history. Travis County then engaged with community members through a series of events and surveys in 2018 and 2019, and used that input to craft restrictive covenants to guide the sale or lease of the property in ways that balance and maintain the school’s cultural, historic, and market value. The restrictive covenants were approved by Commissioners Court on October 29, 2019. In January 2023, Commissioners Court approved a Concept Planning process to reimagine Palm School

Travis County Exposition Center

The County operates the Travis County Exposition Center. In November 2019, voters approved 2% of the Hotel Occupancy Tax (HOT tax) to be used by the County to renovate and expand facilities at the Exposition Center. Currently, the HOT tax is being fully utilized by the City of Austin, so no HOT tax funds are available for County use. Conversations are still occurring about how to bring the Exposition Center redevelopment vision to reality.
