Serve as a 4-H CAPITAL AmeriCorps instructor and help deliver hands-on science learning experiences to youth in Travis County through afterschool programs and project-based education. 

Before You Apply 

4-H CAPITAL AmeriCorps instructors support youth through afterschool science clubs, project-based learning, and program activities at school sites across Travis County. Full-time and half-time positions may be available depending on program needs. 

What You’ll Do

Teach science clubs, plan lessons, support program activities, and help create engaging learning experiences for youth.

Time Commitment

Serve from mid-August through June with weekday hours and occasional weekend responsibilities.

Step 1 - Learn About the Role

4-H CAPITAL AmeriCorps members serve as science club instructors for youth through hands-on, project-based learning experiences focused on agriculture and science education. 
As an instructor, you may: 

  • Lead afterschool science clubs Monday through Thursday 
  • Support summer programming in June 
  • Develop lesson plans and unit activities 
  • Help care for animals and gardens used in programming 
  • Complete office and team responsibilities such as attendance tracking, reporting, meetings, and trainings

Step 2 - Confirm the Time Commitment

Before applying, make sure the schedule and service term work for you. 

Full-time 

  • 1700 total hours 
    About 42 hours per week 

Half-time 

  • 900 total hours 
    About 21 hours per week 

Typical service hours are Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm. Instructors also lead afterschool clubs from about 2:30 pm to 6:00 pm Monday through Thursday. Occasional weekend service may be required.

Step 3 - Review the Requirements

Applicants should be prepared to meet the following expectations: 

  • Commit to a service term from mid-August through June 
  • Have reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license 
  • Consent to multiple criminal history background checks 
  • Bring a positive attitude and willingness to learn 
  • Experience working with youth is preferred, but not required 

New to science?

You do not need a science background to apply. Training and support are provided throughout your service term.

Step 4 - Understand Where and How You’ll Serve

Morning hours and Fridays are typically spent at the program office. Afternoons are spent at assigned school sites. Instructors may teach at one or two schools each week, depending on placement.

You should also know:

  • School assignments are based on program needs and are not guaranteed in advance
  • Many school sites are not accessible by bus or bike
  • Mileage reimbursement is provided for travel between work sites
  • Program shirts are required during instruction
  • Closed-toe shoes are required at school sites

  • Training in science curriculum and youth development

Members also gain hands-on experience in teaching, collaboration, curriculum development, and leadership.
