Ozone Action Day Forecast
The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality has issued an Ozone Action Day alert for the Austin area for Thursday, October 10, 2024 and Friday, October 11, 2024. Weather conditions are expected to be favorable for producing high levels of ozone pollution in the Austin area.
An ozone action day is declared when the concentration of ground-level ozone reaches high levels. High ozone days are caused by a combination of weather conditions and air pollution, and can be harmful to humans.
During ozone action days, people are advised to take steps to reduce their exposure to ground-level ozone. Keep reading to learn how to protect yourself.
Safety Tips
Take these simple steps to protect yourself and your loved ones from the harmful effects of ground-level ozone.
- Be Air Aware. Check real time air quality near you at www.airnow.gov.
- Stay indoors. Limit your time outdoors to reduce exposure to high ozone levels.
- Choose less intensive outdoor activities. Walk instead of running. Garden instead of hiking, tennis instead of soccer.
- Schedule outdoor activities for early in the morning. Ozone levels are lower in the morning and increase throughout the day.
Air Quality
The Air Quality Index (AQI) scale by U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
Even on days that are not declared an ozone action day, air quality varies. It’s a good idea to stay up-to-date on ozone levels in your area and act accordingly.
How To Reduce Your Impact
Take a step towards a healthier planet by following these practical tips to reduce your impact on the environment and improve air quality..
- Take advantage of public transit. On ozone action days, use public transit or carpool.
- Don’t idle. Pollution from cars (oxides of nitrogen, NOx) produces ozone and contributes to air pollution. Go inside instead of using the drive-thru and roll down your windows when sitting in your car.
- Fill up after 6 p.m. If you must fill up your car, do it after 6 p.m. Gasoline is made of VOCs that contribute to ozone formation in the presence of sunlight.
- Postpone lawn work. Do not use gas-powered lawn equipment on Ozone Action Days. If you do have to work on your lawn on an Ozone Action Day, wait until after 6 p.m.
