Travis County is offering free training on how to administer the opioid overdose reversing medication Naloxone (NARCAN). The training is available virtually or in person to any individual, group, or organization living and operating within Travis County.

What you’ll learn:

  • The impact of the opioid overdose public health epidemic locally and in the United States.
  • The signs of an opioid overdose.
  • How to administer Naloxone (NARCAN) safely and properly.
  • The role of harm reduction in the opioid overdose public health crisis.

The course can be tailored to the needs of the individual or group.

Upon completion, attendees are eligible to receive free Naloxone.

Travis County has been under a public health crisis declaration since 2022 due to the alarming number of opioid overdose deaths. In 2024, Austin-Travis County EMS paramedics responded to 1,102 calls about overdoses. There were 878 emergency room visits because of overdoses.

However, with efforts to make access to NARCAN more widely available, the number of accidental drug-related deaths has decreased from 486 in 2023 to 380 in 2024, according to the Travis County Medical Examiner’s Report.

Time is precious when someone is suffering from an overdose. If an individual with Naloxone can administer it to a patient while waiting for paramedics to arrive, they can potentially save a life.
