Travis County and the Spears family invite you to the naming of the Tax Office in honor of Nelda Wells Spears. She was appointed tax assessor-collector Aug. 1, 1991, making her the first African-American tax assessor-collector among the state’s 254 counties. She was elected Travis County tax assessor-collector for five consecutive terms, retiring on Dec. 31, 2011.

Spears was a proud Austin native and a lifelong member of Greater Mount Zion Baptist Church. She attended Austin public schools and graduated from L. C. Anderson High School. She went on to Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in English and became a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Spears completed her graduate studies at Memphis State University, where she earned a master’s degree in communications.

TAX RATE: TRAVIS COUNTY ADOPTED A TAX RATE THAT WILL RAISE MORE TAXES FOR MAINTENANCE AND OPERATIONS THAN LAST YEAR’S TAX RATE. THE TAX RATE WILL EFFECTIVELY BE RAISED BY 3.5 PERCENT AND WILL RAISE TAXES FOR MAINTENANCE AND OPERATIONS ON A $100,000 HOME BY APPROXIMATELY $9.12.
