Travis County Proposition A: Exposition Center

 

Proposition A authorizes Travis County to assess a 2% hotel occupancy tax on the price of hotel/motel rooms located within the county. The resulting funds will be used to renovate and expand facilities at the Travis County Exposition Center located near Decker Lake adjacent to Walter E. Long Metropolitan Park.

Travis County Proposition A only concerns the Expo Center and is not related to the City of Austin’s Proposition A or B.

THERE IS NO NEW PROPERTY TAX ON COUNTY TAXPAYERS. Proposition A’s Hotel Occupancy Tax (HOT) applies to the price of hotel and motel rooms and will be paid by hotel/motel guests.

Travis County Expo Center

The Travis County Exposition Center is a multi-purpose facility located near Decker Lake. The site occupies 128 acres adjacent to Walter E. Long Park. The City of Austin owns the land, but the Expo Center and its buildings are owned and operated by Travis County under a lease from the city.

Hundreds of thousands of visitors attend a variety of events at the Expo Center every year, including rodeo and stock show, concerts, banquets, conferences, fun runs, arts & crafts shows, and community events.

The November 5, 2019 Special Election is specifically for approval of a hotel occupancy tax to fund the renovation, modernization, and construction of new and existing facilities at and around the site of the Travis County Exposition Center.

TAX RATE: TRAVIS COUNTY ADOPTED A TAX RATE THAT WILL RAISE MORE TAXES FOR MAINTENANCE AND OPERATIONS THAN LAST YEAR’S TAX RATE. THE TAX RATE WILL EFFECTIVELY BE RAISED BY 3.5 PERCENT AND WILL RAISE TAXES FOR MAINTENANCE AND OPERATIONS ON A $100,000 HOME BY APPROXIMATELY $9.12.
