A safety plan is a set of actions that can help lower the risk of being hurt by your abuser. Learn how to create one for yourself.

What is safety planning?

Advocates with the National Domestic Violence Hotline say a safety plan includes information specific to you and your life that will increase your safety at school, home, and other places that you go daily. It’s about brainstorming ways to stay safe that may also help reduce the risk of future harm. It can include planning for a future crisis, considering your options, and making decisions about your next steps.

The SAFE Alliance can also help you understand how to make a Safety Plan. The SAFE Alliance is a merger of Austin Children’s Shelter and SafePlace, both long-standing and respected human service agencies in Austin serving the survivors of child abuse, sexual assault and exploitation, and domestic violence.

SAFE offers a wide range of services to victims of domestic and sexual violence (and also child abuse and neglect, stalking, and trafficking/exploitation) in the City of Austin and Travis County, TX community.

How do I make a safety plan?

RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network), the nation’s largest anti-sexual violence organization, provides some tips about how to keep as safe as possible during dangerous situations. The steps include:

1

Make an Escape Bag with Important Documents

This may include items such as your birth certificate, license, passport, social security card, bills, prescription drugs, and medical records. Include cash, keys, and credit cards. Hide the bag well. If it’s discovered, call it a “hurricane bag” or “fire bag.” If you are escaping with children, include their identifying information as well.

2

Plan a Destination

If you’re not going to stay with someone you know, locate the nearest domestic violence shelter or homeless shelter.

3

Plan a Route

Then plan a backup route. If you are driving, have a tank of gas filled at all times. If you rely on public transportation, know the routes departure times. Many public transportation systems have mobile apps that update their schedules and arrival times.

4

Prepare Your Support Network

Keep your support network in the loop. Let them know how to respond if the perpetrator contacts them.

5

Important Safety Note

If the situation with your partner becomes dangerous, go to the police or a shelter first.
