Background & Historical Context
Established more than 30 years ago, the Summer Youth Employment Program began as an initiative launched by local community leaders before Travis County and the City of Austin joined forces to continue creating meaningful career exposure opportunities for local youth. Since then, the program has provided thousands of young people with valuable summer employment experiences across public, private, and nonprofit sectors.
To prepare Travis County youth for the workforce through earn-and-learn experiences that foster independence, responsibility, and community engagement.
Program Highlights and Key Facts
- 30+ years serving local youth
- Tailored training that prepares youth for workforce success.
- Up to 750 paid positions offered annually
- 80+ public, private and nonprofit partners
- Jointly funded by Travis County and Austin Public Health
How the Program Works
Each summer, for 5–7 weeks, eligible youth ages 14–17 (and up to age 22 for those with disabilities) are matched with paid work opportunities across a variety of sectors. After applying and completing the eligibility screening process, qualified youth are invited to participate in job readiness training. Participants receive mentorship, hands-on experience, and exposure to professional environments that prepare them for future employment. Please note that completion of all application requirements does not guarantee placement in the program.
