The Detention Services Program provides for the detention of male and female juveniles who are awaiting disposition of their cases by the court. Detention Services is provided 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, in a secure facility.

Detention Services Continuum of Care

While they are in detention, they will receive:

Assessment, Psychological, & Medical Services

  • Youth entering Detention begin with Assessments and Screening by intake JPOS
  • All youth presented for Intake receive the following:
    • Health Screening
    • MAYSI
    • Mental Health Assessment
    • Substance Use Survey
    • Referrals to Assessment Services and/or Treatment Services are made from results of screening.
    • 24 hour / 7 day a week medical staff.
    • Full time Counselor providing crisis intervention as needed to youth.
  • Health Department clinics are provided weekly

Educational Services

  • All youth participate in education services immediately upon admission into Detention. Education services are provided year round
  • Detention follows the AISD school schedule
  • All youth receive the following core curriculum subjects: Social Studies, Reading, Math, Science, English, Physical Education
  • Transition to post program is facilitated by AISD employees on campus.
  • ESL certified teacher on campus
  • Tutoring services provided on weekend(s)

Communication Services

All youth receive the TJJD mandated three communication rights:

  • Phone calls – dependent on level earned for the day.
  • All youth are guaranteed at least one 5 minute phone call every 7 calendar days in Detention
  • Mail – unlimited mail privileges for youth
  • Visitation – All youth can have one 30 minute visit with up to two approved visitors on each visitation day. The visitation schedule is Saturdays, Sundays and County Holidays from 1-4 pm and Wednesdays from 7-9 pm.
  • Special visits are scheduled in coordination with JPO and Detention administration.

Personal Responsibility Program

  • Program designed for youth who are having difficulty programming in general population.
  • The PRP provides more structure and a slower pace to juveniles.
  • The PRP provides juveniles with cognitive based skills that enhance decision making and anger management.
  • The goal of the PRP is to equip youth with the needed skills to be successful while in detention.

Flex Detention Program

  • Program designed for youth who do not require complete secure detention confinement.
  • Program allows for youth to be supervised during high risk times of day.
  • Program allows for youth to participate in other treatment plan activities:
    • Education on home campus
    • Employment in community
    • Attend treatment services in community
    • Passes & treatment services with family
  • Program allows Judges to exercise further judicial options in best interest of youth

Youth Programming

  • Youth receive gang education groups using the Phoenix Curriculum Gang Awareness.
  • Youth receive Life Skills and Social Skills training through usage of ARISE Curriculum.
  • Community Partners provide voluntary Religious and Spiritual Services which are held weekly and vary throughout the week.

TAX RATE: TRAVIS COUNTY ADOPTED A TAX RATE THAT WILL RAISE MORE TAXES FOR MAINTENANCE AND OPERATIONS THAN LAST YEAR’S TAX RATE. THE TAX RATE WILL EFFECTIVELY BE RAISED BY 3.5 PERCENT AND WILL RAISE TAXES FOR MAINTENANCE AND OPERATIONS ON A $100,000 HOME BY APPROXIMATELY $9.12.
