In 2017, the Travis County District Attorney’s Office formed its Civil Rights Division. The Civil Rights Division is comprised of two units—the Civil Rights Unit (CRU) and the Conviction Integrity Unit (CIU), each of which has the responsibility for investigating and prosecuting cases involving some of the most challenging issues in the administration of criminal justice and impacting our local and national communities.

The CRU is responsible for the review and investigation of and prosecution of all officer-involved shootings, in custody deaths, allegations of unlawful use of non-deadly force and police misconduct involving harm to an individual.

The CIU conducts post-conviction reviews of actual innocence claims to ensure that the prosecution of cases by this office results in convictions that are obtained in a just manner and, most importantly, against the right individual.
